From Ancient Texts to
Living Practice

Join us on the third Friday of each month, as Bhante Sujato explores a different early Buddhist sutta. He begins by helping us enter the text’s own world: Who is speaking? What did people of that time believe and care about? What is happening in the conversation, and why do the words matter?

From there, we follow how the Buddha responds and what his teaching opens up. This way of reading brings the suttas to life—not as distant ideas, but as teachings we can reflect on and put into practice in our own lives.

Enter the sutta’s world: Who is speaking, and what did these words mean in their time?

Follow the conversation: How does the Buddha meet people where they are and guide them toward insight?

Explore the texts: Compare Pāli and Chinese Āgama versions when parallels are available.

Bring it to practice: What can the teaching show us about the mind and life today?

Explore SuttaCentral

Want to explore a sutta further? SuttaCentral brings together early Buddhist texts, translations, and parallels. You can look up a discourse by its name or reference, choose a language and translation, and—when a parallel is available—read related versions to see how the teaching has been preserved.

How to use it

01

Search for a sutta by name or reference.

02

Choose a translation and language.

03

Look for related or parallel texts, when available, and compare the passages.

Parallels are not available for every sutta.
